Metal Detecting | How To Purchase A New Or Secondhand Metal Detector
Deciding on your first metal detector is very crucial, begin metal detecting the correct way.
The metal detectors beneath are the best selling starter units suitable for children and beginners of all ages. Shop around for the best deal, there are first-class coinshooters on the market designed to give the treasure hunter years of enjoyment.
Remember £25 won't buy a metal detector it will buy you a non functional toy...you must be prepared to pay £150.00 minimum to get you started. Personally I do not search beaches so I can't give you advice on that subject.
I'm wet behind the ears to this metal detecting, should I buy a cheap machine just to get going with.
What to Look For When Buying a metal detector.
My advice would be to avoid cheap machines especially the Chinese models flooding E Bay normaly with numbers like md 3030 or md 3036, these are known as Shanghai specials and can be bought from the manufacturer in China for around £50 each, they will not perform well, the depths lays claim of 2 meters is total bullshit, try 4inches on a coin to be more realistic.
Purchase one of these and you will soon be disappointed with metal detecting and abandon the hobby permanently. However if you're budget is strictly limited the Black Night Magpie from Detecnicks is a good purchase at £59.00 but dont expect to much.
What is my best choice when purchasing a metal detector on a budget.
I'd would say that a good serious starter price would be in the region of £150-£300 for a brand new machine with a warranty. However the smart money would be for a good used models that have earned great respect within the detecting world, such as a Tesoro Silver Sabre or any Laser model.
These models perform equally as good as todays modern machines, iron rejection and build quality is so much better. Prices will be around £250, but remember your machine will be worth the same in 5 years time providing you look after it.
Remember machines costing £500 perform every bit as well if not better than machines costing £1000, so do not get caught in the big bucks trap you will NOT have better or deeper finds, just a bigger hole in your pocket and loose more money when you are trying to sell your detector.
One last thing for UK buyers... beware of metal detectors cheaper than normal, they may be imports from another country with no VAT and import duty paid, you will have a cheap machine but no UK warranty, re selling your metal detecting machine will be difficult, and buying spare parts for your non uk machine will be almost impossible, so make certain your prospective purchase has serial numbers on it, and you'll be able to then check with the importer if it's a UK machine.
If you're serious about metal detecting and have a limited budget, watch out for a used Tesoro, XP, Fisher, Minelab,Whites or Laser Metal Detector.
Good local places to do metal detecting is in parks and playgrounds. old parks, Our community parks, city parks, zoos, picnic areas, city playgrounds, old playgrounds, sandboxes, swings, campgrounds and old battlefields is where we could go to look behind large trees, grassy areas, old trees, shady spots, unpaved parking lots, under park benches and pathways.
